Hinge setup guide (2024)

New to Hinge or hitting the reset button? This guide’s for you. Get set up for swiping success by prepping your pictures, info and prompts ahead of time. Remember, a fully fleshed-out profile doesn’t just look good—it ranks higher too.

Hinge’s MO is to build a more robust view of you, and more opportunities for your match to connect on very specific parts of your profile, not just vaguely swiping on all of your profile! They’ve sorta eliminated the blank canvas bio and replaced it with you being able to add prompts (sorta like captions) onto each pic and video you upload.

Pictures/ Video

maximum 6

Your pics and vids are proof points that convince someone to match with you, and Hinge lets you upload up to 6. Plus give each a prompt and caption.

But remember, it's about quality over quantity. Your profile is only as strong as your weakest pic or vid. It’s not just about filling slots—it’s about crafting a compelling visual story.

Quick tip

Always preview how your content has uploaded because your pics and vids will take up anywhere between 1/2 to 2/3 of the screen (see below)—that’s less dominant than other apps but there’s still no excuse for blurry or poor-quality ones. Especially when every second counts!

Ps. You can set Hinge to continually test for your Top Photo and put it first.
Pps. I’m not single- my Hinge is on pause to help you level up!

“Bio”

drop-down + more prompts

Hinge spares you from building a blank bio but lets you add your essential info and gives you ways to showcase more of your personality.

1. Pick from a set of predefined interests and info, (to be hidden or shown) and…

2. Easy-as, pre-written prompts, covering all themes, that take all the pressure off building a bio from scratch!

don’t forget

You can be filtered out by how you answer your drop-down answers, so pay attention to what’s important for you, and what’s not.

Written Prompts

max 3

You can use a maximum of three written prompts to show more sides of yourself.
But use them wisely! They’re not meant for one-word answers, they’re meant to seed conversation and help you connect!

Remember, Hinge was one of the first apps that allowed you to “like” and connect with very specific aspects of someone’s profile, not just generically liking the entire profile.

Quick tip

Your bio is the second place your match will look for confirmation to swipe right. Keep it upbeat and positive. Even if you're cynical about finding someone on an app, your profile isn’t the place to air your frustrations. No dirty laundry or demands on how others should swipe. This is precious real estate—don’t waste it!

written prompts

You can select up to three prompts and answer each one in up to 225 characters! That’s right— don’t drop one-word answers and run. Pick prompts in different categories to seed conversation and add some emotion!

max 1

You can use a maximum of three written prompts to show more sides of yourself.
But use them wisely! They’re not meant for one-word answers, they’re meant to seed conversation and help you connect!

Remember, Hinge was one of the first apps that allowed you to “like” and connect with very specific aspects of someone’s profile, not just generically liking the entire profile.

Quick tip

This is one of the most polarising features on a Hinge profile- and the one that most often gets recorded and sent to social media accounts. Voice is actually such a potent part of… In short, if in doubt, leave it out!

Voice Prompt:

These are basically all existing, just recycled!

Verification

photo + id verified

Getting verified is a no-brainer. Not only might it be the closest you'll get to that blue tick, but also because of the “Photo verified chat” setting. Paid subscribers can choose to only get messages from other verified users, which means you’ll get blocked if you haven't taken the literally two-second task of verification.

It proves to your matches you are who you say you are and shows you don't want to waste anyone's time (including your own!). It’s a big green flag.

Quick tip

Verification and the integrations Tinder offers with your Instagram and Spotify all work together to boost your credibility. Will they 10x your profile? No. But they do build trust, and every bit adds up to show you’re real and keen.

Search settings

This one’s super important—who you’re actually swiping on!

Until you set up your search filters, your feed is stuck on default settings: age ranges and distances designed to show you the maximum number of profiles.

This can be totally overwhelming (and totally irrelevant!) and seriously mess with your mindset when you’re first using the app.

Think critically about who you’re letting into your feed. But remember, you’re choosing a human (who may not have read this guide on how important it is to complete their profile), not ordering a perfect specimen from a drop-down menu.
